In 2018, planning approval was received to construct a 126 unit aparthotel on this site, along with a range of ground floor commercial units. However this planning consent was not implemented.
Instead, Leeds City Council is now seeking planning permission for a development of similar design, which will instead accommodate five commercial units and a gym to be operated by Leeds City Council at ground floor level. Above this will be a five storey, 143-bed hotel, with bar and restaurant for hotel guests.

The proposed development will replace long-vacant retail units along the George Street side of Kirkgate Market.
This project aims to preserve the market’s rich heritage and enhance its role as a significant landmark in the heart of our city.
We believe that these proposals will have a positive impact on the city centre, bringing diversity, further vibrancy and new opportunities to the market and its surrounding area. They include:
A new 143-room five-storey hotel with a bar and restaurant, accessed from George Street
Leeds City Council-operated gym facilities at ground floor level, offering state-of-the-art amenities
Five new ground floor commercial units on George Street, creating increased activity and footfall.
In addition, it is estimated that approximately 50 new full and part-time jobs will be created locally when the development is operational, with around 80 jobs supported during the construction phase.
